英会話初心者の頭の中にはいちおう習ってはいるが使いこなせない英語の構文がいくつもある。
so that 構文もそんな構文の一つだろう。
so that 構文に関する解説記事はたくさんあるが、解説はいくら読んでも英会話の実力にならない。知識で終わる。
本ブログは英会話の実力養成を主旨とするので、この記事でも読み進むうちに so that 構文の使い方を音声とともに感覚的にマスターできるようにしている。
また、so that 構文に関連する表現である such that, in order to(that), so as to 構文も適宜解説をしているので、この記事を精読すれば関連表現の使い方が一気にわかる。
一度読んで終わりではなく、何度も読み返し発音して英会話の実力養成の訓練に役立ててほしい。
so + 形容詞 or 副詞 + that の使い方
まず、so の後に形容詞や副詞があり that と続く形の感覚に慣れる。
意味は「とても～なので～だ」と感覚的に覚えておくといい。
また、that は口語（話し言葉）では省略されることが多い。
so + 形容詞 + that の例文
She is so kind (that) everybody loves her.「彼女はとても親切なので皆彼女のことが大好きです。」
It was so hot yesterday (that) I didn’t want to go out.「昨日はとても暑かったから外出したくなかったの。」
I am so hungry (that) I am going to faint.「腹減りすぎて気絶しそう。」
She looks so exhausted (that) I can’t ask her to work extra hours.「彼女すごく疲れてるみたいだから残業頼めないよ。」
Your shoes smelled so bad (that) I had to throw them away.「の靴すごく臭かったから捨てなくちゃいけなかったわ。」
I found the offer so attractive (that) I accepted it right away.「そのオファーはとても魅力的に感じたのですぐに受けたよ。」
so + 副詞 + that の例文
She speaks so fast (that) I don’t quite follow her.「彼女はとても速く話すのでうまく付いてけないよ。」
He studied so hard (that) he could pass the exam.「彼は一生懸命勉強したので試験に合格できました。」
I stayed up until so late yesterday (that) I am sleepy now.「昨日遅くまで起きてたから今眠いよ。」
このように日本語の解説で理解しようとするよりむしろ多くの例文に当たり、音声とともに練習することで 「so + 形容詞 or 副詞 + that」の構文が自然と身に付くようにすることが英会話の効率的な訓練となる。
次に、関連する so + 名詞 + that と such + 名詞 + that の使い方を述べる。
so + 名詞 + that と such + 名詞 + that の使い方
so + 名詞 + that は名詞の前が many, much, few, little の場合はそのままでいい。
so + many(or much or few or little) + 名詞 + that の例文
・many
There are so many bees in the woods (that) you should wear a bee suit.「森の中には蜂がたくさんいるから蜂用防護服を着たほうがいい。」
I know so many people (that) you won’t feel left out if you are with me.「多くの人を知ってるから私といっしょにいれば淋しくないわよ。」
・much
The doctor has so much knowledge (that) you can learn anything.「先生は知識豊富だから何でも学べるよ。」
She has got so much money (that) she doesn’t have to work for the rest of her life.「彼女はお金たくさん出来たから残りの人生働かなくていいの。」
・few
There were so few people in the park (that) I didn’t feel excited.「公園には人がほとんどいなかったからあまり楽しくなかったよ。」
We had so few people present (that) we got worried about the outcome.「出席者がほとんどいなかったから結果が心配になったわ。」
・little
I have so little money (that) I must live from day to day.「お金がほとんどないからその日暮らしするしかないんだ。」
Mind you. We have so little time (that) we must finish lunch soon.「言っておくけど、時間がほとんどないからそろそろランチ終わらなくちゃ。」
such + 名詞 + that の名詞は単数でも複数でもいいし、名詞の前には形容詞が付く。
such + 形容詞 + 名詞 + that の例文
Susan is such an attractive girl (that) all the boys in the class long to be close to her.「スーザンってとっても魅力的な女の子なのでクラスの男の子たちはみんな近づきたがるのよ。」
Do you think you are such a good friend of them (that) they count on you?「お前は彼らのいい友達だから頼りにされていると思うかい？」
They were such nice people (that) they often distributed food to the homeless.「あの人たちほんとにいい人でよくホームレスに食べ物を配ってたわ。」
注）such a nice guy のように a + 形容詞 + 名詞の形は so + 形容詞 + a + 名詞に置き換え可能。
例えば「彼はとっても素敵だからいつでもいっしょに遊びたい。」は次の二つの英文が可能。
He is such a nice guy (that) I want to hang out with him anytime.
He is so nice a guy (that) I want to hang out with him anytime.
so that + will or can or may の使い方
so that の例文は以下に示すが、特徴が二つある。
１．主に口語（話し言葉）で使われる。
２．that 以下の従属節では必ず will, can, mayのいずれかが入る。理由は、従属節では事実ではない予定や可能性や目的などを表現するから。
また、主節のほうが過去なら時制の一致で will, can, may はそれぞれ would, could, might となる。
so that + will の例文
I am going to wear this dress so (that) I will stand out in the party.「パーティーで目立つようにこのドレスを着るつもりよ。」
I am going to wake up early tomorrow so (that) I won’t be late for school.「学校に遅れないように明日は早く起きるよ。」
I got a haircut so (that) I would look good at the interview.「面接でいい感じに映るように髪を切ったわ。」
I made a note of the lesson so (that) I wouldn’t forget.「忘れないようにそのレッスンはメモしたよ。」
意味は「～するように」あるいは「～しないように」となる。
so that + can の例文
You might want to carry some cash so (that) you can give a tip.「チップを渡せるようにいくらかキャッシュを持ってたほうがいいかも。」
Do your best and study hard so (that) no one can catch up with you.「誰も追いつけないようにベストを尽くして勉強しなさい。」
I kept the door open so (that) anyone could see the inside of the room.「私はその部屋の中を誰もが見れるようにドアを開けっぱなしにしました。」
She hired a good bodyguard so (that) her ex-husband couldn’t get back at her.「彼女は元旦那が反撃できないように優秀なボディーガードを雇った。」
意味は「～できるように」あるいは「～できないように」となる。
so that + may の例文
Get your dad’s green light so (that) you may go out this evening.「今晩外出するためにはお父さんの許可をもらいなさい。」
You might want to take a coat with you so (that) you may not catch a cold.「風邪を引かないようにコートを持って行ったほうがいいかも。」
We needed to take his lecture twice so (that) we might understand the background.「われわれは背景を理解するために彼の講義を二度受ける必要があった。」
She gave us a good suggestion so (that) we might not get involved in any crime.「彼女は我々がどんな犯罪にも巻き込まれないように良いことを教えてくれた。」
意味は「～するために」あるいは「～しないように」となる。
次に、so that と意味的には同じだがニュアンスが異なる in order to, in order that, so as to について解説する。
in order to, in order that, so as to の使い方
in order to と in order that は so thatと同じ意味（～するために、～するように）で使われるが、so that が口語でよく使われるカジュアルな表現であるのに比べて比較的フォーマルな表現。
従って、ビジネス文書や論文などの文書ではよく使われるが、友達同士の普通の会話ではあまり使われない。
また、to 不定詞（～するために＝副詞的用法）も同じ意味になるが、フォーマル・カジュアル差で云えばこれは so that と in order to(or that) の中間くらいと考えればいい。
so as to は一番堅い表現であり会話ではまず使われない。文書のみと考えるといい。
in order to の例文
in order to は to 不定詞の副詞的用法（～するために）に in order が付いた表現と言える。
否定形（～しないために）は in order not to という形になる。
意味上の主語を使う表現では in order for 意味上の主語 to 動詞という並び方になる。
また、in order to は文中でも文頭でも使われる。
You should have enough sleep everyday in order to keep yourself in shape.「体調を維持するには十分な睡眠を取るべきだ。」
It is desirable to recheck the time and place in order not to make any misunderstanding.「誤解が生じないために時間と場所を再確認することが望ましい。」
I would appreciate if you could accept my advice in order for you to feel safe.「貴殿が安心して頂くために私のアドバイスを受け入れていただければ幸いです。」
We decided to use the same chat box in order for any of us not to be left behind.「私たちは誰も置いて行かれないように同じチャットボックスを使うことを決めました。」
Just in order for us to be on the safe side, it is advisable to cooperate with Mr. Cooper.「われわれの安全のためにクーパー氏と協力することが望まれます。」
in order that の例文
in order that は極めて文語的な表現（文書）なので口語（話し言葉）では so that を使う。
I am going to send my deputy in order that you may discuss the issue with him.「私は貴殿がその課題について話し合えるように私の代理を送るつもりです。」
The front door is supposed to be closed at nine p.m. in order that no one can enter the building thereafter.「正面玄関はそれ以降は誰も立ち入れないように夜9時に閉められることになっています。」
so as to と so + 形容詞（or 副詞）+ as の例文
so as to は in order to のように意味上の主語を添えることができない。
従って、その文の主語が意味上の主語になる。
否定形（～しないために）は so as not to という形になる。
また、so as to は in order to のように文頭では使われない。必ず文中で使う。
so as (not) to の例文
You are required to pay full attention so as to avoid any possible accidents.「あらゆる事故の可能性を避けるために細心の注意を払うことが求められます。」
The company employed some talented people so as not to lose competitiveness in the market.「会社は市場における競争力を失わないために数名の有能な人材を雇用した。」
so + 形容詞（or 副詞）+ as (not) to の例文
The actor was known so rich as to have no interest in performance fee.「その俳優はとてもお金持ちということで知られており出演料には興味がなかった。」
The customer spoke so loudly as to be heard by everyone in the reception.「その客はとても大きな声で話をしたのでフロントにいた誰にでも聞こえました。」
まとめ
・so that 構文に限らず英文の理解は知識で終わると英会話力にはならない。
・英文の理解は感覚的にマスターすることでのみ英会話力になる。
・英会話力の養成には何より英文を何度も発音してマスターすること。
・so that, such that, in order to(that), so as to の各構文は一括して理解すること。
・so that は日常会話でよく使われるカジュアルな表現。that の発音はよく省かれる。
・in order to(that) は比較的フォーマルな表現で友達同士の間ではあまり使われない。
・so as to は文語体表現。口語ではまず使われない。
